Covid and Play

Updated at 1 p.m. on 3/31/21 with recordings.

Play, so important to all of us, but especially those aged 0-5, is a challenge in many parts of DC and in other places — even without the complications of a pandemic. Play & Thrive DC was founded to tackle play inequity in our nation’s capitol. Demetria Bright, executive director of the relatively new program, joins Community thru Covid on March 31 to discuss this work.

Ms. Bright discusses her work as an occupational therapist; the importance of sensory play, especially amid heavy screen time required of even our youngest students in this pandemic; and the disparities she saw between parts of the city where nannies, play groups, and extra curricular activities abound and parts of the city where children have far fewer options.

Visit Play & Thrive DC’s Facebook page for more on play kits eligible families can take home and volunteer opportunities.

Segment begins around the 14 minute mark —

Community thru Covid airs weekly on Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET. Tune in via We Act Radio (audio only) or We Act Radio’s YouTube channel. Check back for recordings and more information posted shortly after air time.
